Introduction
For this project my team and I were were tasked with designing a Wellness App. It had to address and understand peoples relationships with mental, physical or emotional well-being.
Design Thinking - Empathise
Unveiling the Insights
On average one in five men die between the age of 16–65 from heart disease and cancer (75% premature deaths)
- Obesity (67% men are overweight or obese)
- Diabetes ( Middle aged men twice as likely than women)
- Suicide ( 4 in 5 suicides are by men)
- Lifestyle ( Men are more likely than women, to smoke / eat unhealthy / drink)
After collating data following interviews and surveys, we decided to produce an Empathy Map. It really helps to see trends in the data and prioritize a few areas of interest. It gives a feeling for the users pain points and desires.
Design Thinking - Define
Problem Statement
We discovered that our target users were men. Men who over worked themselves and forgot to see the benefits of having time off. That actually it increased productivity over the longer period compared to over work, which lead to higher chances of burn outs and negative behaviour.
Persona and Journey
We can see that following an intense week of work Andreas' energy levels are low but he still wants to push himself to achieve something.
These insights allow us to think of HMW's (How might we) questions. Such as;
- How might we motivate Andreas to workout and study even when they’re tired?
- How might we help Andreas understand that it’s important to take days off to recharge the batteries?
- How might we allow Andreas to feel less guilty about having an unproductive day?
Design Thinking - Ideation
We decided on applying the Crazy 8 method. It allowed us to proceed quickly as we could generate a lot of ideas in a short period of time but it also puts you under pressure to think creatively for solutions.
What came about was a subscription box designed to remind and encourage men to take guilt-free breaks. The box, curated with snacks, beverages, and engaging activities, aimed to create a mindful pause without the burden of unproductivity.
Visual Competitor Analysis
After Heuristic and Competitor Analysis we began to get a sense of what else was on the market. As we had previously seen it was mostly female orientated delivery boxes. With only a handful of purely male themed services.
Design Thinking - Prototype
Mid & High Fi Wireframes
The app itself is primarily an onboarding process, with the initial filter system to see what kind of contents the customer would like to see in the box. Every box is randomised, to maintain the surprise element, but we needed to factor in things such as; food allergies and interests, so that the customer still gets a box tailored to them.
We were concerned that the user would stop using the app post onboarding so we included in the designs micro interactions such as a loyalty card, delivery status animations and a spinning roulette wheel that the user can spin once a day to claim a potenial prize or discount.
Design System - Style Guide
Design Thinking - Test
We opted to do an elevator pitch of the concept with all of our previous interviewees instead of showing them wireframes because the primary product is the service and not the app.
Main responses were:- Will the delivery of the box interrupt my productive time?
- Will the boxes pile up because even though I want to use them will I make time for them?
- How do I know it’s time to take a break?
I believe after interviewing more people we could of better judged the intended product.
One interesting finding was:
“I am more interested in the connection and conversation aspect with the delivery person. That would be more fulfilling than a box of things I would put to one side.”
Given more time I think it would have been vital to conduct more usability and desirability tests. It would help us to answer questions such as:
- Are the additional features of the app needed?
- Do the users understand the entire process?
- Where do they get stuck in that journey?
